Wei Legend
History has it that during the rule
of Emperor Qianlong, there was a dilapidated temple dedicated to the Buddhist
Bodhisattva Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, in Anxi County, Fujian Province.Everyday a poor farmer Wei passed by
the old temple on his way to his tea field and reflected on the deteriorating
state of the temple. Poor Wei did not have enough money to rebuild the temple.
But one day he bought a broom stick and an incense from his home . He
swept the temple, and as an offering to Guanyin, lit the incense. He spent
several months doing this twice a month.
One night he dreamed of Guanyin
goddess, asking him about a cave behind the temple where a treasure was
waiting. He was instructed also to take the treasure and share it with others.
He went to the cave behind the temple the next morning, which he had never
before seen. He found a tea shoot. He planted it in his field and nursed it
into a large bush which produced the finest tea.He gave cuttings of this rare
plant to all his friends, and started selling the delicious tea under the name
Tieguanyin.
With the passing of time, Wei and
all his neighbors flourished. They repaired the old temple and became the
village's revered place. The legendary tree still exists, and is regarded as a
national treasure. Located close to the tree, carved in the cliff is the name
of the farmer who found the original tea, according to the legend.
